Modern Foreign Languages

We are committed to creating rich language opportunities through a broad and ambitious modern foreign languages curriculum.

At Co-op Academy Grove, our chosen modern foreign language is Spanish. Spanish is one of the most popular modern foreign languages in the world and many of our local secondary schools teach Spanish at GCSE level.

As a school, we follow a curriculum developed by Rachel Hawkes. Through weekly lessons, we provide children with opportunities to listen, speak, read and write in Spanish. This scheme of work enables children to hear Spanish being spoken by native speakers, and builds their understanding of vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar.

During Spanish lessons, children are given the opportunity to engage in a variety of role plays to practise their speaking and listening skills. Once they have mastered saying words and phrases aloud, they record their learning in Spanish booklets which they can refer back to.

As they progress, children are also given opportunities to read and write short passages of Spanish for a range of purposes. At Co-op Academy Grove, we are very fortunate to have a Spanish subject specialist from a local high school who supports the teaching of Spanish every two weeks.

Why is learning a modern foreign language important?

  • Research has shown that children who learn a language at a young age are more likely to learn other languages as well as travel to other countries. We want to inspire our pupils to do this.
  • Learning a Modern Foreign Language (MFL) supports an understanding of living in a multicultural society, provides an opening to other cultures and fosters curiosity about the wider world.
